Bookshops are closing. Big bookshops are closing. Looks like the end of the (bookselling) world. It scares me a bit.
It's not that I fear I can't sell books any longer. Most titles i sell are ebooks. 100% of them sell from download sites. But...
I like books. Bound books. And it looks like they are en endangered species right now. Are we steering towards a world where our children will no longer use books? Can a reading device substitute the feeling of our most cherished paperbacks, already a bit torn and grubby, which fall open at exactly that page we loved to read again and again? Will they abolish opulent bound books, heavy, full of pictures and information, which used to be on display on our coffee-tables?
Or will paper books always keep their place in our homes?
I must confess, I wouldn't like a world without paper books.
Besides, no ebook will ever be a substitute for that printed book any author proudly displays to friends and family, with the words: "This is MY book!"

You're right. Buying books overseas has it's merits. And Amazon was the one to make this easy, so we definitely have to thank Amazon for that.
But I still vote for printed books and local bookstores as well, just because I love them.
